Pig Kidney Xenotransplantation Update

On July 14th, 2023, Surgeons at NYU Langone Health achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully transplanting a genetically engineered pig kidney into a human recipient who had been declared dead by neurologic criteria. The transplanted pig kidney, which had a single gene modification to prevent rejection, demonstrated exceptional performance by continuing to function optimally for an impressive 32-day period within the recipient’s body. This accomplishment marks the longest duration of a gene-edited pig kidney’s functionality in a human, moving us closer to the realization of a sustainable and alternative source of organs for transplantation.

The successful transplant is a significant step forward in the quest to revolutionize organ transplantation. With over 103,000 individuals awaiting transplants in the United States, particularly for kidneys, the shortage of available organs is a pressing concern. The continuous monitoring of the recipient will contribute to a deeper understanding of the procedure’s implications and its potential for clinical trials, further advancing this remarkable medical advancement. If you want to learn more about the procedure and next steps, you can read the full article at nyulangone.org.
