Agulos Biotech: Innovating Cell Growth with Plasma-Based Serum

Porcine Partnership: Taking Control of Your Supply Chain

Disease Diagnosis Laboratory

Agulos Biotech, a Lake Mills-based company, was founded as a joint venture with Johnsonville, leveraging the sausage company’s expertise and resources to find new, sustainable uses for porcine products. This collaboration has led to the development of an innovative plasma-based serum that serves as a cost-effective alternative to fetal bovine serum (FBS), a product widely used in biotechnology for growing cells.

In an episode of WisBusiness: the Podcast, co-founder and scientific director Nathan Chesmore explained that FBS is difficult to source due to regulatory constraints, creating supply chain instability. Agulos’ alternative, however, is not only more affordable but also requires lower quantities and promotes faster cell growth.

Presently, Agulos Biotech also has serum-free formulations to further improve safety and regulatory compliance, reducing risks of viral contamination. By turning what was once underutilized material into a valuable biotech resource, Agulos is a prime example of innovation and sustainability in action.
